Plant Asset Management
There is tremendous value in augmenting Plant Asset Management (PAM) systems by adding AirSprite’s Wireless Adapters and Gateway that can integrate the intelligent field data currently stranded in HART devices. According to some experts, if an industrial plant used HART data to change only 25 percent of its preventive maintenance to predictive maintenance, it could realize up to a staggering 60 percent reduction* in maintenance expenses alone.
The amount of stranded data is huge. An estimated 20 million HART pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical, and control devices have stranded data – the devices are part of older installations and are connected to analog-only loops or the data is too difficult to extract out of a Distributed Control System (DCS).
Why is this stranded data of interest? HART is a widely deployed standard that specifies digital data and commands for field devices such as instrumentation. A HART device typically has more than 30 different digital data items that are of interest to plant applications, in particular for PAM. This data identifies a device, its properties, its calibration settings, measured process variables, and many diagnostic alerts related to the health of the device. Retrofitting makes all of these variables continuously available to plant applications, enabling dramatic improvements in the management of plant assets and of plant operations.
AirSprite’s Wireless Adapter and Gateway products simplify the ability to access this data for applications such as plant asset management. Wireless Adapters can be installed anywhere on the loop, including right at the instruments of interest, to communicate HART and transmit to and from plant applications via AirSprite’s Gateway. Unlike other retrofit approaches, AirSprite’s products enable users to incrementally retrofit field device assets starting with their most critical assets first.
